Bachelor and master theses

The bachelor and master thesis is a module examination. Every examination must be registered, including the Bachelor's and Master's thesis.

Topics for theses

  • can be found on the web pages or on the notice boards of the chairs and can be determined in consultation with the university lecturer (or in exceptional cases a member of staff, see below) of the department who suggested the topic,
  • can be determined in consultation with a university teacher (or staff member) of the faculty or
  • also in consultation with external experts with the participation of a professor (or staff member) of the department (external experts must submit a request for review (first or second review) (form below ), as well as internal non-doctoral staff members).

Group work

Final theses can no longer be written in the form of a group thesis.

Supervisor and reviewer of the final thesis

The bachelor thesis is issued and supervised by a professor, junior professor or habilitated member of the Faculty of Computer Science. Other scientists must apply for the approval of the examination board. The thesis is examined and evaluated by the supervisor and another examiner.

For Bachelor's theses, one of the examiners must be a doctoral member of the Department of Computer Science; for Master's theses, one of the examiners must be a professor, junior professor, or habilitated member of the Department of Computer Science.

For teaching degree programs, please refer to your current examination regulations.

Registration of the thesis

Once you and your supervisor have determined the topic of your thesis, register your thesis.

The examination administration (Dec. 4.3) will check whether you meet the requirements for registering your thesis (120 credit points in the Bachelor's program and 60 credit points in the Master's program). If you meet the requirements, the Examination Administration will issue you a routing slip in which your name, the title of the thesis, the names of the reviewers and the start and submission dates of the thesis are entered. You must have the routing slip signed by your first examiner and return it to the Examination Administration Office within seven days.

You can return the topic under once and only within the first three weeks; the work is then considered not to have been started. In your examination regulations you will find under which conditions this return of the topic is possible.

Duration of the thesis

The processing time for Bachelor theses in Computer Science and Applied Computer Science is four months; in justified exceptional cases, the processing time can be extended once upon request. The processing time for Bachelor theses in the teaching profession according to LABG2009 is eight weeks; in the case of an empirical or artistic Bachelor thesis, an extension of four weeks can be applied for. Please refer to your examination regulations for details.

The processing time for Master's theses in Computer Science and Applied Computer Science is six months; in justified exceptional cases, the processing time can be extended once upon application. The processing time for Master's theses in the teaching profession according to LABG2009 is fifteen weeks; in justified exceptional cases, the processing time can be extended once by up to four weeks upon application.
